SOCIAL GATHERINGS.
The Epsom-- branch of the League of Mothers, over which Mrs. T. H. Macky presided, held its final meeting for the year in the Baptist Church Hall, Inverness Avenue, on Thursday afternoon. An address on "Studies in Adaptation" was given by Professor Sperrin-Johnson, touching on many intersting 'subjects. Afternoon tea was provided by Mrs. T. H. Hill. ." '
A farewell party was given Mrs. McDonald, senr., who is leaving for Australia, at Anglesea Street, by Mrs. Mills and Mrs. W. Hayes, sister of Mrs. McDonald. The supper room was beautifully decorated with large bowls of sweet peas. The guests were: Mrs. O'Brien, Mrs. Hayes, Mrs, Mills, Mrs. Cox, Mrs, Spoul, Mrs. Collet, Mrs. Banks, Mrs. Stevens, Mrs. Lorning, Mrs. Waldron, Mrs. Corles, Mrs. Geogan, Miss L. Burgess, Miss N. A special sub-committee has been set up by the executive of the Provincial Federation of Women's Institutes to deal with the institutes' remits affecting national questions. This sub-committee .is now considering a petition to the Minister of Railways. The petition will "ask that clerks be allowed to participate in advantages offered by workers' concession tickets by extending the time until 9 a.m. A memo, on "Educational Films," in relation to the teaching of history and geography, written by Mrs. Irwin, of Greenhithe, has. been forwarded to her Excellency Lady Alice Fergusson. .;
A delightful evening was spent at ithe home of Mr. and Mrs. Better, of Castor Bay, Milford, when a gift evening was given to Miss Pearl MacNaughjton, of Auckland, who is shortly to be married. Dancing and games took place- on the tennis lawn, beautifully illuminated with coloured lights. Miss Gwenth MacNaughton gave some novel dance items. Tables for bridge and "500" were arranged in the drawing room, the successful competitors being Mrs. Kember and Mr. McGuiness ifor (bridge, and Mrs. Woods and Mr. Adams, "500." The hostesses, Mrs. P. Eetter
and Mrs. Page were attractively gowned in black georgette.
A surprise party, organised by members of the Highland Tennis Club, was •held at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Buckley, Highland Road, Mount Albert, on Thursday evening last, and a very . enjoyable time was spent with dancing, , games and music. Mr. and Mrs. Buck-
ley, who are leaving Auckland to take up their residence in Kaitaia, will be •much missed by the club, and as a token of appreciation were asked to accept a handsome case, of fish krnVes, forks and servers, with the best wishes of the club. Amonst those present were: Mesdames Ewen, Wilson, McKenzie, Henneken, Bartlett, Holland, Eeynolds, Misses Paul, Derrick, Barwell, Sawkins, Edwards and Tyndall.
A pleasant evening was spent at the Oriental Rendezvous, Manegere, on Wednesday, when Miss Grace Allan entertained a number of friends. An- amusing haka was given by Mr. Phil Lardner and Mr. H. Smith. Supper was served on the verandah, a special toast being given to two Wanganui friends. Among those present: Mr. and Mrs. A. Allan, Mr; and Airs. H. Smith, Mr.! and Mrs. R!
