SOCIAL GATHERINGS.

A bridge party was given by Mrs. J. Blackwood on Wednesday evening at her home in Takapuna. Large bowls of beautiful roses were arranged in the drawing room, where the card tables were. Prize winning cards were handed in by Mrs. Foster, Mrs. G. Hunt and Mrs. E. C. Cutten. Excellent dance music was played, and the success of the evening was due to the work of the committee, Mrs. Smith (secretary), Mrs. Stansfield (president), Mrs. Eaton, Mrs. S. Grieve, Mrs. B. Grieve and Mrs. Welsh. There were many pretty dresses present, and the judges awarded the prizes to Miss Aileen Eaton, daylight saving; Miss Marjorie Smith, candlestick; Miss Beth Eaton, coster; Miss Mabel Wills, desert wind; Miss Eva Sly, Spanish lady; Miss Alice Wills, gipsy.

The last meeting for the past winter of the Takapuna Western Area Katepayers and Residents' Association was held at the Catholic Orphanage on Wednesday afternoon. These meetings will be ■ discontinued until next February. Mrs. J. C. Blomfield presided, but owing 'to the rain the attendance was not large. The Beautifying Society reports good progress with the work connected with Taharota Park, the old hawthorn hedge is removed, and levels are now being taken. The Borough Council is to be requested to take some step to prevent cattle being driven along the tarred footpaths, which become cut up and destroyed, through this practice. *■ * * * Mr. and Mrs. A. Mingay entertained the gardening section of the League of New Zealand' Penwomen at their'home in Milford yesterday afternoon. An interval during the afternoon allowed their guests to see some portion of the pretty gardens surrounding the house, after which an adjournment 'indoors was made, and a very dainty afternoon tea W&s served. Some amusing competitions were taken part in. Amongst the guests were: Mr. and Mrs. A. Stuart Boyd, Mrs. S. ' • IYi view of the success of a series of card evenings held weekly during the winter months by the Papatoetoe Rugby League, it was decided at a function held in the Renown Hall on Thursday evening to continue the evenings for a further period. An average. attendance of about forty people was reported by the committee. The evening took the form of a series of competitions which were won by Mrs. Duane and Mr. Neiliss, of Otahuhu, principal prize; Mr. Wilcox and Mrs. Baxter, aggregate; Mrs. White and Mr. Claude Docherty, consolation prize. * • * * I A presentation was made at Papatoetoe on Th&rsday evening to Mr and Mrs. Hector Coles at their new home m Station Road by the members of the Papatoetoe Fire Brigade. The fire brigade assembled at the Town Hall and journeyed on the fire engine to the home, where they gave the newlymarried couple a reception. The party n-ere invited inside, where Captain G J Bradley, superintendent, on behalf of the brigade's men, presented Mr. and Mrs. Coles with a set of vases. The final of the season's gatherings of the West Coasters' Association was held in St. Benedict's Hall on Wednesday evening. There was a good attendance and dancing, cards and supper passed away an enjoyable evening. Morrow s orchestra rendered efficient music. Solos were rendered by Messrs. T. Tuohy and Harley. Mrs. Kennedy and Mr. J. Wainwright won the prizes in the card tournament. * * * * Despite the rather boisterous weather on Thursday evening, the social and dance held in the Kohhnarama Hall was well patronised by the residents of the district and visitors desiring to support the worthy cause of improving the playing area of the Kohimarama public school. An enjoyable and humorous prolamine was presented by the following: Misses Nell Lidgard, Hope Asher, Edna Thomas, Messrs. Raymond Reeves, Ophir Rees, Will Roberts and Jack Stokes. Morrow's Orchestra played the dance numbers, which Avere well appreciated by the dancers. ' Mrs. J. H. Hubber and Miss Lorna Andrew were the conveners. Mrs. J. H. Hubber wore peach georgette, crystal beaded shawl. Miss Lorna Andrew wore a frock of black frilled lace, edged in gold.
