BRONZE MEDAL FOR SWIMMER,

CHRISTCHURCH, Thursday.

A number of awards for bravery were made to-dav by the Court of Directors of tlie Royal Humane Society of New Zealand.

William Horn Henderson, of Huntly, was awarded a silver'medal.

Henderson, who is a trucker in the Rotowaro coal-mine at Huntly, rescued Joseph O'Brien from beneath a fall of coal, and, with - O'Brien, attempted to rescue Samuel Broadbent, although realising that a heavier fall of coal could

be expected at any minute. The expected fall happened. About 100 tons of coal fell and killed Broadbent. It also' buried O'Brien again and severely injured Henderson. In spite of bis injury Henderson succeeded- in rescuing O'Brien for a second time. Still another fall occurred after Henderson's efforts had finally succeeded.

Louis Saunders, of New Brighton, was awarded a bronze medal.

Saunders rescued Miss Kathleen Goodenougli from drowning on October U. Miss Goodenougli was attacked by cramp when bathing in deep water at New Brighton, and was being carried off by the current. Saunders and a man named Franklyn went to the rescue fully •dressed and brought the girl ashore.

Tlie award of a certificate was made to William McGee, of Wellington, a waterside worker.

McGee rescued John Wilson, ship's cook, from drowning in the Wellington Harbour on August 27.

Elliott McKane Major, of Toko, Taranaki, and Henry Alexander Boswell, of Eltham, were awarded letters of commendation for giving assistance in rescues from drowning on January 13.
