SLOW SCORING BY Y.M.C.A.

Slow and uninteresting play characterised the match between Y.M.C.A. and ; University on No. 3 wicket. Garrard, the- 'Varsity captain, won the toss, and had no hesitation in sending Y.M.C.A. in to bat on a pitch which was somewhat soft on top but was nothing like so difficult as might have been expected in view of the heavy rain which had fallen. As a matter of fact, the wicket did not give a great deal of help to the bowlers, and the wind was a more potent factor in making difficult the deliveries of Smeeton, Bush and Garrard. The outfield was very "dead," but even so there was no excuse for the slowness of the Y.M.C.A. scoring. They took three hours to „,,., „ , get a hundred runs m?*" and the compila- ' > jpP , ' . tion of their total *Jih 113 lasted from shortly after two °' clock until 5,25, minus a quarter of ilP' an hour tea interA Jllp*' ' ''' shaping confidently W$M? s when he was comI pletely beaten by a "" """"" Garrard, Innes and

W. Smeeton,

Clark could do no-

thing with the bowling, and it was left for Lyon and Sutherland to retrieve a bad start. They batted correctly, without showing much enterprise, and keen fielding coupled with the slow state of the outfield combined to keep the scoring very subdued. Riddolls made a useful 27, and, in partnership with Kemp, made a stand for the last wicket, the score being carried from 88 to 113. Although the batting was of the dull and dreary order, there was plenty of interest in the bowling. Smeeton and Garrard kept an excellent length, the first-named making good use of the breeze to exploit his in-swingers, which frequently had the batsmen in difficulties. Garrard turned the ball in puzzling fashion and it was a beautiful delivery which disposed of Clark, but his bowling lost some of its sting towards the end of a long spell. 'Varsity made a fairly good response to the moderate Y.M.C.A. total, Mc-Douo-all batting attractively for his 17. After an absence of several seasons Metge has returned to the side, and the ex-Whanearei player showed excellent form, hitting crisply to the offside. He and Bush played confidently till the close.
