THE MELBOURNE CUP.
TO BE RUN TO-MORROW. PHAR LAP AND NIGHTMARCH. The Melbourne Cup will be run to-mor-row, and with the scratching of Pentheus fifteen remain in the event, the field being the smallest for many years uast. High Syce accounted for the Caulfield Stakes,* Caulfield Cup and Mel- . bourne Stakes in his last three efforts. For his Caulfield Cup success he was raised 101b, bringing his weight to 9.11, but he does not get any penalty for his • win in the Melbourne Stakes on Satur- ; clay. Carbine won with 10.5, which is the best weight-carrying performance in j this race, while Archer succeeded with 10.2 and Poitrel with 10.0. Winalot has gone amiss. Nightmarch won the Epsom Handicap, finished second in the Metro- ; politan Handicap with 9.12, and in his \ next two efforts won the Randwick Plate ; nnd the W. S. Cox Plate at Moonee Valley, while he was third in the Melbourne ■' Stakes on Saturday. Kidaides is a ; pietty useful sort, and won the Sydney ' Handicap at the A.J.C. meeting, while he was second to Nightmarch in the Randwick Plate. Paquito was third in the * Metropolitan Handicap, while the ex- \ New Zealandr/ Second Wind has shown , fairly good form since being in Australia, •, though he has yet to display ability over two. miles. Demost was third in the * Melbourne Cup last season. Phar Lap J vvon both Derbies and the Craven Plate, j ind he is a very short-priced favourite , to-day. Prince Viol won the Coogy Handicap at Caulfield and also the Moonee ] Valley Cup recently, Second Wind being ( runner np on each occasion. It looks as ( though the hardest to beat will-he ] PHAR LAP NIGHTMARCH.
