PHILISTINES CLUB.
1 Philistine entertainments were brought to a close by a very successful evening held in their meeting place, the Amateur Operatic Society Hall, on Saturday. The feature of the programme was the reading of the club's official organ, " The Scorpion," a journal comprised of smart witticisms and clever satires on the personnel of the club. It was read by the editor, Mr. 11. E. Gillespie, who was in the chair, and whose installation evoked much merriment. Songs were given by Miss Sarah Stacpoole and CommissionedGunner Taylor, and these were followed by a musical sketch written by Mr. J. Y. Birch, in which appeared the Four Originals (Miss Beryl Poulton, Miss Kitty Williamson, Mr. A. B. Birch, and Mr. A. Prentice. In the competition for the best joke of the evening, the badge of merit was awarded to Mr. Gillespie. Mr. J. W. Wilson, who has acted as secretary of the club /or the past two years, was presented with an entree dish in recognition of his- services, and Mr. Fred McCallum, producer for the club, received a complete set of Oscar Wilde's plays for his successful work during the season. After supper, dancing was held, and the final evening of the season was joyfully concluded. Amongst those who were present were: Mrs. H. E. Hutchinson, amethyst lace and velvet; Mrs. Harold Simson, green georgette with pin tucked bodice; Mrs. McCauley, frock of black lace and georgatte; Mr?. D'Este, black lace over kingfisher blue satin; Mrs. Ovenden, black georgette; Mrs. Isemonger, dust coloured lace; Mrs. Bird, blue- taffeta shot with bronze; Mrs. Harold King, flame satin with black georgette coatee; Miss Moses, black satin with diamante trimming; Mrs. C. Prime, white georgette frock; Mrs. Graham Birch, palest pink pleated georgette; Mrs. H.
