COUNCIL " PASSES TAXING BILLS

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. There was another long sitting in the House of Representatives yesterday, the Public Works Statement being under discussion from early afternoon till 1.43 o'clock this: morning. The House then went into committee on the Public Works Estimates, totalling £8,300,000,. all of which were passed by 2.35 a.m. The House then adjourned till 2.30 p.m. to-day.

The debate on the Land and Income Tax Amendment Bill was resumed in the Legislative Council yesterday. Replying to criticism, the Leader of the Council, the Hon. T. K. Sidey, justified the Government's proposals and said that the mortgage exemption provision did not go far enough; it , was on too liberal a scale. The bill contained, no nevv principle in respect of super taxation. Such a method of. obtaining extra revenue was inevitable.. There was no ground for the 6uggesti6n.- that, the increased taxation was dictated .by a certain class. He. admitted that.it Was a pity a commission had not been set up to determine what lands r '7ere suitable for subdivision. : ' ; The bill was passed with a minor technical amendment.
