PAEROA-POKENO.

MAY BE STARTED SOON.

LONG-WANTED RAILWAY.

PART OF COAST LINE,

AUCKLAND MEMBERS' ADVOCACY.

(By Telegraph.—Parliamentary Reporter.) WELLINGTON, this day. There is reason to believe that work on the construction of the PaeroaPokeno railway line may be started this year, as there is a feeling of expectation a sum may appear in the Supplementary Estimates this session. The total cost of the work is estimated at £1,020,000. There are engineering difficulties, because the line would have to pass over country which in parts is a quaking bog, offering little hope of solid foundation. There is reason to believe,

however, that the Government wishes to take the work in hand at the earliest op p o intimity. The Hon. A. J. Stallworthy has been a most consistent advocate of the line, and has urged the Government to undertake its construction as part of the East ■ ► • ■ ■ Coast Main Trunk, and therefore in conformity with the Government's policy of completing long lines of railway. With Mr. Stallworthy and the Hon. J. B. Donald holding Ministerial rank, Auckland's interests are well represented in the Cabinet, and it seems most probable that this line, so long authorised, may be an established fact in the not too distant future.
