The construction of four sections of railways is authorised by. the Railways Authorisation Bill, introduced in the House of Representatives last night. The first line mentioned is the Wel-lington-Napier railway (Lower Hutt Valley duplication). It is a branch line, leaving the existing Lower Hutt Valley railway at about 1 mile 64 chains on the railway chainage, and running generally to the southward of the existing line to Point Howard (Port Nicholson). The length is about two miles 30 chains. The second line authorised is the Midland Railway from the end of the authorised line at Murchison to Inangahua. The length is about 28 miles 40 chains. The third line is the South Island Main Trunk railway, for a length of about 54 miles, from the end of the authorised line at the Clarence River to Parnassus..

The East Coast /Main Trunk line is the subject of another authorisation in respect of 35 miles from a point on the existing line from Gisborne to Ngatapa, southwards via Wharerata to a junction with the authorised line from Wairoa to Waikokopu. The cost of constructing these lines shall be paid out of moneys to be appropriated for that purpose by Parliament.
