SUNDAY SCHOOLS.

ANNUAL MEETING OF UNION,

PROGRESS DURING YEAR

The fact that consistent interest was being taken in the annual Scripture examinations, which had been conducted for nearly forty years, was commented upon at the sixty-fourth annual meeting of the Auckland Sunday School Union last evening. The president, the Rev. F. A. Thompson, presided. The annual report stated that a total of 1077 candidates, representing 1153 schools, sat for the Scripture examinations. Special prizes had been won by the following: Miss O. Jarvis (Edendale Baptist), and Messrs. D. Connell' (Victoria Hall Methodist Avondale), M. Hewitson (Epsom Methodist), L. Roberts (Birkenhead Methodist), .T. Mounsey (Green Lane Congregational), and B. Harris (Puriri). Mount Albert Baptist, Avondale Baptist, Tararu Presbyterian and Karaka Schools had won shields of merit. The roll of the union comprised 376 schools, 3139 teachers and 30,8(5(5 scholars, increases of 1240 and 430 respectively. It was pointed out that the series of lectures on the training of teachers by Dr. C. H. Laws and Sir. J. W. Shaw had been very successful. The children's Sunday service broadcast from IYA had been a feature of the union's activities. The retiring president (Mr. Thompson) addressed the meeting, stressing the desirability of establishing a school for religious education in Auckland.
