MOUNT ROSKILL ROAD BOARD.

The meeting of the Mount Roskill Road Board, held last night, was presided over by the chairman, Mr. E. F. Jones.

Pedal Bicycles.—The Auckland Suburban Local Bodies' Association suggested that as a number of the local bodies are adopting a by-law for the registration of pedal bicycles, a distinctive letter should be registered as well as a number. It was decided to pass a by-law accordingly.

Engineer's Estimates.—Mr. J. Dawson submitted the cost of a four-inch main in Ridge Road, from Cape Horn Road to White Swan Road, would be £1486, and the cost of laying a two-inch pipe in Halsey Drive £845. He estimated the cost of a concrete seawall at £300. It was decided to substitute a four-inch main, for the two-inch,, and to form the district named a special rating area for the purpose of raising a loan to do the work. The Methodist Trust Board are to he asked how much they will contribute to the cost of the wall.

Ward System.—The board was requested by the Roskill West Ratepayers' Association to take active steps to inaugurate the ward system before the next road board election. Mr. S. Scarborough moved, and Mr. R. Sanft seconded, a resolution approving of the ward system for the purpose of representation and that of finance. Speaking in support of the resolution, which was adopted, Mr. Scarborough said his meaning was that the money collected in each ward would be spent therein, after allowing for overhead expenses, etc. The Finance Committee will now deal with the matter and report to the board.

Western Area.—The Roskill West Ratepayers' Association asked the board to reimburse to the drainage loan the sum of £7000, as the storm'water drainage for the western area cannot be borne by the whole of the district. The western area has paid its proportion of the drainage for Mount Roskill, and as there are no special storm water drainage areas in Mount Roskill this portion of the district should not in future be levied for the rest of Mount Roskill. The board was also asked to support the application of the association to the Chief Postmaster for post office facilities in that part of the district, including money orders and telegrams. The first request was declined, and the other one agreed to.

Finance.—The estimates for the year 1929-30 are: General rate £11,546 13/4, collected to date £5681 3/2; general rate collected for same period last year £1493 9/0. Total revenue from April 1, 1929, to date, £16,607 10/11; total revenue last year for the same period, £7,422 16/11. Increased difference in revenue, £9184 14/, and debit balance at this date, £1478 7/3. Last year at this time £8062 3/8, decrease in overdraft £6583 16/5. ■ Mr. Warren, clerk, stated that the board was saving £8 6/3 a week interest on overdraft by getting the rates in.

Mounds of Scoria. —The Works Committee reported that two of the sections donated by Mr. G. Winstone are mounds of scoria, and it would be impossible, until the scoria has been removed, for any beautifying to be carried out. It was decided to communicate with Mr. Winstone tq that effect.

Clean-up Week.—At the request of the Roskill West Ratepayers' Association the board decided to have a clean-up week in December.

Landscape Road.—The board disclaimed any liability in regard to a footpath in Landscape Road, in reply to the Mount Eden Borough Council's request to be allowed to form the footpath, Mount Roskill to pay half the cost.

Mount Albert Road.—lt was decided to clean, reform and metal the Mount Roskill side of Mount Albert Road, opposite the concrete slab of Mount Albert, so that the public can have no excuse for not using that side of the road, and when completed Mount Albert Borough Council be advised that this part, of the road is in a useable condition, and Mount Roskill cannot prevent the traffic using their concrete slab.
