BANKS STILL SLIPPING. 4 fair volume of business was put through the local Exchange after the "Star" went to press yesterday, and several late sales were recorded at this morning's call. . The trend of values, however, is still downwards, with banks leading the way, and Government stocks lagging in the rear. .. ~ Commercial of Australia provide the most striking Instance of the fall in values. Only a few weeks back these 10/ shares were selling readily at £1 10/, whereas this morning, after sales at £1 6/2 and £1 6/1, the highest offer left was £16/. English and Scottish showed a drop ot 6/ on the last sale made on October 1, whilst British Tobacco dropped nearly 3/6. , , Bank of New Zealand are a shade easier.

Bidding was inclined to be dull at this morning's call, with no real activity in any section. Even Government stocks and Breweries scrip are comparatively neglected. The Noon Call. The morning turned out rather dull, and the noon call found only a few fresh sales recorded. Quotations at mid-day generally followed the values declared at the morning call. A sale of Newton, King preference, which pay 6% per cent, indicates increased confidence in this old-established Taranaki concern since its reconstruction in August last. Interest Rates. The return to the investor on his outlay, based upon the latest dividends and in* the case of loans and debentures upon redemption at maturity, works out as follows for the latest sales:— PER CENT PER ANNUM. £ s. d.
