MAY INCUR PENALTY.
WIN IN NEW ZEALAND CUP TRIAL.
When some time back the Wellington Trotting Club issued the programme for the meeting to be held this week-end, it was stated that the club had been given to understand by the handicapper, Mr. G. Paul, that a win in the New Zealand Cup Trial, which is a mile and a quarter race, would not entail a penalty for the New Zealand Cup. This assurance by the club is not altogether supported by the handicapper, and at the Auckland Trotting Club's meeting on Monday Mr. Paul told the writer that he had not definitely stated a win in the Cup Trial would not incur a penalty for the Cup. Mr. Paul said that it was very likely no penalty would be applied, but it depended upon which horse won and whether the win was an easy one or not. It is safe to say that if the winner on Saturday is penalised for the New Zealand Cup there will be a strong complaint from the owner.
