GRAND JUROR FINED.
DID NOT HEAR HIS NAME CALLED.
(By Telegraph.—Press Association.)
WELLINGTON, this day,
Nonappearance when his name was called for service on the Grand Jury at the Supreme Court resulted in William McDonald being lined £5 by the Chief Justice, the Hon. M. Myers.
A little later McDonald appeared, and explained that, owing to his being slightly deaf, he had not heard his name called.
"Well, I am not going to let you off entirely," said his Honor. "You see, your not having responded to your name meant that some other person has to serve in your place, and it is probably just as inconvenient for him, probably more so."
In reducing the fine to £2, his Honor emphasised that persons summoned to attend as Grand Jurors must understand their obligations.
