GOLDEN FOREST A TOTAL LOSS. Aground in the Shelikof Straits, near Seattle, the American steamer Golden Forest, formerly the West Togus, is reported to be a total wreck. She is a vessel of 5058 tons register, and is owned by the Oceanic and Oriental Navigation Company. The steamer went ashore at Avatanak Island, Unimak Pass, about July 24, and as a result leaked in No. 1 and No. 2 holds. She was refloated and was beached for temporary repairs at Akutan Island. A portion of the cargo from the damaged holds was removed into a small steamer, the EI Cedro. The Forest King was refloated on August 13. and on August 30 left for Seattle in tow of the tusr Salvage King. Finally she again met with misfortune, this time in the Shelikof Straits. An attempt was made to refloat her, but on September 12 she was abandoned as a total loss. The steamer left Australia last April for Japan, whence she proceeded to the Pacific Coast. She tvas well known in New Zealand waters. MAUI POMARE IN PORT. The New Zealand Government motor ship Maui Pomare (Captain W. H. Macdonald) arrived from Norfolk Island this morning and berthed at the King's wharf. The vessel left Auckland on October 21 and arrived at the island at daylight on the 24th. She left there the evening of the following day and for the last 24 hours of the return voyage experienced strong easterly winds. Passengers who arrived by the Maui Pomare were: Mr. and Mrs. W. and Miss Boucher, Mr. W. J. Jones, Mrs. E. S. Murray, Mr. and Mrs. Bevis, Mr. and Mrs. J. Woodhouse, Mr. and Mrs. Wickham. GOLDEN VTEST ARRIVES. Fully laden from the Pacific Coast, the steamer Golden West (Captain E. H. Phillips) arrived at Auckland this morning and berthed at the King's wharf. The vessel brought 2,200,000 ft of lumber and 4000 tons of general cargo, including 1,000,000 ft of lumber and 1000 tons of merchandise for Auckland. The remainder of her cargo is for Wellington, Lyttelton and Timaru. She is expected to leave here on Friday evening for the South. After completing loading the Golden West left San Pedro on October 1. Until last Thursday the voyage was made under favourable conditions. Then, GOO miles off the New Zealand coast the steamer encountered the fringe of a cyclone. The wind had been easterly, but suddenly changed to the N.W., and speed was reduced to five knots throughout Thursday afternoon and night. The following doy there was an improvement, with a change to the S.W., and gradually the wind and seas moderated. The officers on the steamer are: Mr. O. W. Ellingsen, chief; Mr. A. Preston, second; Mr. J. Michelson, third; Mr. J. J. Buckley, chief engineer; Mr. Fred Krick, first assistant; Mr. A. W. Tompkins, second; Mr. C. -C. Dunham, third; Mr. D. Macliver, chief steward.

The Government motor ship Maui Pomare arrived at S o'clock tins morning from Norfolk Island. When cargo, mail and passengers are landed from the vessel sue will be laid up for her annual overhaul and survey. The steamer is to he dispatched for Apia on November 12, to load fruit for Auckland. BUAPEHU EXPECTED TOMORROW. According to wireless advice ieccived by the New Zealand Shipping Company, the steamer Ruapehu expects to arrive at Wellington to-morrow morning from London and Southampton. She will discharge cargo at Wellington, P'rt Chalmers, Lyttelton and New Plymouth. ULIMAROA ARRIVES TO-MORROW. Having left Sydney at noon on Saturday, the Huddorc-Parker steamer Ulimaroa is due at Auckland to-morrow morning with 253 passengers, mail and cargo. She will berth at the Prince's wharf. RARANGA SAILS WEDNESDAY. With a cargo of refrigerated and general merchandise for New York, Boston. Halifax and London, the Shaw, Savill and Albion steamer Raranga is scheduled to leave Auckland at 4 o'clock on Wednesday afternoon. PASSENGERS BY PORT MELBOURNE. TREGONELL BRINGS PHOSPHATES. Laden with 7500 tons of phosphates for Auckland, the steamer Trcgonell, to the agency of Messrs. Henderson aud Macfarlane, arrived yesterday afternoon and berthed at the King's wharf. The master (Captain S. Richards) reported heavy weather for the three days, commencing Wednesday last. The vessel was pitching and rolling heavily in the storm and shipping ■heavy water. Passengers by tlie Tregonell were Mr. Waterman and Miss Ashby. RADIO FROM RANGITIKI. Wireless advice has been received by the New Zealand Shipping Company from the motor liner Rangitiki that the vessel expects to arrive in Auckland from Southampton about 6 o'clock on Friday morning. She will unload a general cargo at Auckland and Wellington, after which she will load for the Homeward trip at Lyttelton, Auckland, Napier and Wellington. The vessel is scheduled to leave Wellington for Southampton and London, via Panama, on December 7.
