IN THE SHADE SCORES.

BEATS RABBI IN WELLINGTON HANDICAP. PAGANELLI SECOND LEG OF DOUBLE. COMMENDATION STAGES COMEBACK. WATCH OFFICER'S WELLESLEY STAKES. (By Telegraph.—Press Association.) WELLINGTON, Saturday. The Wellington Racing Club's ' spring meeting was opened at Trentham to-day in fine; cold weather.-. The track was very fast and in good order. The attendance was large. Favourites had a bad day, but the totalisator returns kept well up, being £53,090, compared with £47,213 last year, an Increase of £5877. In the Wainui Handicap Atholspear lost his rider, E. Burgess, who sustained a fracture of the skull.

Commendation "vVins Well,

Commendation was i*esponsibie for a high-class performance in the ' Wainui Handicap. He only scored by a head, but he received more than one check at the false rail, when trying to get clear. Once he got an opening he showed all his old speed.

The field gave a lot of trouble at the post, but a good dispatch, except for Merry Damon, who was nearly down, was effected. Admiral Drake, f roni No. 1, began best, with Great Charter, Atholepear and Cashier next, but before they had gone a furlong Latin Quarter and Night Lad had rushed up. Going down the back Admiral Drake, Latin Quarter and Night Lad led from Great Charter, Cashier and Commendation, Atholspear having lost his rider between the seven and the six furlongs ■ posts. Admiral Drake, Latin Quarter and Night Lad led round the turn and into the straight from Cashier, Great Charter and Commendation, with Prickles and Black Duke beginning to put in an appearance. Commendation was twice checked at the false rail, but he drew out and won by a head from Prickles, who got up on the rails and beat Admiral Drake and Black Duke by a length, the latter pair being separated by a head. Then came Keddar, Blimp, Great Charter, Latin Quarter and Vesperus. Cashier and Night Lad had died right away. Prickles was'a shade unlucky, as she was receiving some interference from the riderless Atholspear.

Third Horse Unlucky.

The start of the Rimutaka Handicap robbed the event of a lot of interest. ' They went off in straggling order, Sea Cob and Lucky Light making the pace. Sea Cob was dropping back on the turn, where Lucky Light and Money Mint led from Pari and Sea Cob, with My Own and Semper Paratus''..next. This, was! the order into the Straight, where some of .the stragglers were moving up. In a good race home Lucky Light held on and won comfortably by half a length from Tourist, who beat Royal Black by a head. A neck away were Royal Black and My Own, with King's Jest, Royal Opera, Pari and Shortly next.«g Lucky Light won well, but Royal Bleak • was very unlucky. With a good start-he would have won. • . I

Star Stranger Fails.

In.the Shade- sprang a,surprise in the big handicap, hut there was no fluke about his victory, for'he came solidly from the back to snatch the prize from Rabbi and they finished clear of the field. When they settled down, Merry Mint and Tcheka led from Talisker, Piuthair and Paitonu and in the back stretch, Merry Mint slowed down the pace. Paitonu and Talisker, however, joined him at the six furlongs and forced him along, the bunch being headed by Rabbi, Tcheka,'Yonut and Hoy lake, with Seatoun and Star Stranger further back. Talisker went ahead at the half and Black Mint made a forward move. Talisker led into the straight from Paitonu, Black Mint, Babbi, Merry Mint and In the Shade, with Seatoun coming through on the rail. Seatoun momentarily looked dangerous, but In the Shade and Kabbi soon drew out and In the Shade won by a head. Seatoun was a couple of lengths behind Rabbi and Tcheka was fourth, followed by Star Stranger, Talisker, Piuthair and Hoylake. Star Stranger was a hot favourite, but ho was never going as a likely winner. Another Surprise. The Wellesley Stakes saw another surprise sprung on the backers when Watch Officer romped home an easy winner from the "good things," Simba, and Chrysology. Simba, a very hot order, could not even run second. Nimble showed the most pace out ot the barrier, and led to the course proper from Satisfy, Watch Officer, Simba and Chrysology. Watch Officer took charge entering the straight and went on to win very comfortably by two lengths from Chrysology, who beat Simba by a length. Satisfy was three lengths further back, fourth, with Nimble next, well clear of the bunch, which was headed by Pass On. The winner, who is by the successful sire Chief Ruler, won as he liked. Simba had every chance. Chrysology finished well, and looks like fulfilling expectations later on. Paganelli Too Brilliant. Paganelli put up a brilliant performance in the open sprint.' His coloura were prominent all the way, and he hung on long enough to win from the stronger finishing Toxeuma. Aspiring, Paganelli, Silvermine and Francolin were the leaders to the course proper, where Toxeuma, Silver Paper and First Money were the handiest of the others. Paganelli drew up on the rails, and was clear of the early leaders at a furlong from home. -There Toxeuma came at him, and Paganelli got home by a head. First Money was third, a couple of lengths back, with Aspiring fourth, and Silvermine, Silver Paper, Banket, Reremoana and .Goshawk next, in a bunch. Paganelli was too brilliant for his field. Juggler at Long Price. Several were solidly backed in the last race> Clarendon being the favourite from Taurua. They had every chance, but were soundly beaten by Juggle, who Won by a length from Taurua, with Auda a similar distance back. Then came Richfield, Clarendon, Yali, Royal Parade, and Monoloff. Juggle won comfortably.
