BOOTS AND BLANKETS WANTED.
DUTY OF THE GOVERNMENT,
APPLICATION TO HOSPITAL
COMMITTEE.
A sympathetic hearing was given a deputation from the Unemployment Committee, lWaded by Messrs. J. Purtell and Moiloyj which waited;on the Relief Committee of tile Auckland Hospital Boaru this afternoon with a request for assistance in equipping men sent to unemployinent relief works in the country with blankets and boots.
The Committee, however, felt the duty of assisting the men devolved, on the Government, as it-'was overdrawn to the extent of £3900 so far as its payments to cases of. distress for the past six months was concerned.
It was decicled to communicate witli the Prime Minister and members of Parliament outlining the committee's attitude, and suggesting that the Government give the matter of equipping men sent to the country its urgent attention.
The steps taken by the Government to relieve unemployment distress have had a reflection on the applications ioi assistance mode to the committee. At the last meeting over 100 families had sought relief, whereas at to-day's meeting only 77 applied. "It is the smallest number of eases we have had for a long time." said Mr. YV. K. Howitt, chairman of the committee. "We have given a lot of young men to understand that we cannot help them if they do not accept work offered under the Government schemes."
