JILTED IN SYDNEY.

WIDOW FROM AUCKLAND. THE CAPTAIN DISAPPEARS. (From Our Own Correspondent.) SYDNEY, October 11. The central figure in a story, featured by Sydney papers, is a charming widow who lived, until recently, in Auckland. She came to Sydney some months back, and incidentally met an engaging personality who called himself a sea captain. As all sailors are credited with doing, he made fervent love to the charming widow. She had a business project in view, and the gallant captain suggested that as he, too, had some business to do in New South Wales, they should pool their resources to their mutual benefit. To that end he borrowed £400 from the charming widow. Her natural care in parting with money to engaging strangers was undoubtedly smoothed over by the fact that all the time the captain

continued his love.-making. So much so, in fact, that he proposed they should not only combine in business, but in life also. Their engagement was announced and a party was held at one of the best Sydney ' cabarets to celebrate the betrothal. Subsequently all their friends in Sydney were sent expensivelyprepared wedding invitations, and the date was set for Wednesday of last week. A fortnight before the wedding, the captain disappeared and so did the widow's £400.- She has been unable to find either, though she has enlisted the aid of the Sydney police.
