LEAGUE FOOTBALL

SOUTH SYDNEY WIN. HUNTLY'S GOOD STAND. VISITORS' SUPERIOR FINESSE. In a fast, interesting game yesterday at Huntly, South Sydney Rugby League team decisively defeated the home side, Huntly, South Auckland Club premiers, by 30 pointe to 3. Whilst emphasising the team finesse of the visitors, the game was not gripping, but it contained many spectacular features. The Australians played with elan and ran up 20 points in the firet spell, during which D. Wateon suffered an arm injury, Eyers going on in the three-quarter line. Huntly played their half, Smith, at eecond five-eighths after the interval, Jones, last man down in the pack, replacing him. The new disposition produced better results, but the visitors, profiting from the home team's weaker tackling, added ten points to three. Taken all round it was a fine match, and gave a line on the artistry of the Sydney thirteen, for whom Eggen (2), Eyers (2), A. W. O'Connor and A. L. Blair scored tries, all of which were converted by Wearing. Manning (winger), Stewart (half) and Dennett (forward) made their, firet appearance in New Zealand play. Paki scored for Huntly. The final scores hardly reflected the evenness of the game. Souths Show Initiative. Once the teams settled down, Paki put in a nice exploiting kick to the corner, but the greens were relieved by two scrum penalties. Watson and Binder got away in the loose, for Why and Bla'lr swiftly to change direotion in a passing bout. Quinlivan, who was in fine fettle, chimed in with an electrifying dash goalwards. However, his pass to the supporting winger, Manning, was forward. The set scrum was won by Huntly, and Whorskey and G. Raynor had the opposition thinking. Spillane and then Wearing were eustaining the defence with resourceful tactics, much ground being gained by & penalty taken by Quinlivan. Largely by a series of strenuous forward moves the visitors invaded, and Eggen snapped up and went over in a good position. Wearing goaled. South Sydney t..t 5 Huntly ./«.. 0 Blair initiated a passing bout, but Why got offside. Following up the kick Huntly made things merry, Paki being prominent. However, Wearing extricated his side in a dodgy run, which carried him clear. S. Raynor tackled determinedly and saved a certain try. Souths were finding the gaps and baffling Huntly owing to their thrustful backing up. In criss-crose passing, disclosing the reverse to advantage, A. O'Connor handled twice and scored easily. Wearing added the pointe. Spectators were now treated to passing on a liberal scale, in which nine of the team, including Spillane, participated.

Playing confidently, the visitors took control but did not show the same eparkle in the second half, which opened with a brilliant manoeuvre by Wearing, who sent Eyers in for a beautiful try. Htmtly, desperate against a more mobile and concerted force, fought doggedly. Whoreky and Smith broke away. Miki Stephenson (whose tackling was effective) and Greeby completed the storming, Timma being unlucky in a prodigious effort to throw himeelf over the line. Further anxiety was given the visitors through a zig-zag run by S. Raynor. Then Whorsky placed a penalty kick in touch a few feet from the corner. Prom the scrum Jones whipped it out to Paki, who ecored, the angle being too much for G. Raynor. South Sydney 3Q. Huntly 3. i

Huntly were hooking the ball towards the end, but it was no use to them, especially when kicked beck to the elusive Spillane, or to the enterprising winger, Manning, who was always dangerous. Miki was cheered for a sideline challenge, to which Wearing replied with a good interception, the two Raynors throwing him into touch when within an ace of scoring. The final score was: South Sydney .m 30 Huntly ....=.. 3 Mr. Harlock was referee.
