Nelson Tasker is now being trained by S. August, at Otahuhu.

Margaret Wallace has done a lot ol work lately, but she has not been staying on well, and though she should* be in the picture in her engagements at Northland, the chances are the last quarter will find her out.

Torpedo Huon did not impress when working two miles yesterday alone. He went the first half in 1.13, mile in 2.23, mile and a half in 3.35, and two miles in 4.43 4-5. He is not a nice pacer when going slow, and his action is much smoother when the pace is right on.

J. Shaw will not have any of hie team racing at the Northland meeting. Arachne and Warspite are just getting over colds, while Carmel has only recovered from a knock he received while running in a paddock a fortnight ago. All three are back working on the track, and will be on hand at the Auckland ■meeting. With this trio, Warplane, Stoney, Native Prince, Great Change, Florent, and a couple of maidens to educate, the Epsom trainer has plenty to do.

Etta Cole, who should have won a race at HamiLton, did not please at all yesterday when F. Gilchrist worked her a mile. To show what a good one she is when going right, she put in a bad break over the first half, but then covered it in 1.9, and the next half, after being almost pulled up to a walk because of another bad break, she ran in 1.10 2-5. the mile being run in 2.19 2-5.' Although the time was satisfactory, her exhibition of trotting was the worst she has given for a long time.

Although slightly lame at times, Student Prince is pottering about the track, but A. Bryee has not asked him to show any speed. The chestnut has only had one start, and this was at the South Canterbury Hunt meeting in June, when he won the Washdyke Handicap in very heavy going. On that occasion there was a field of 15, and Student Prince won by three lengths. If he is started on Saturday at Northland it may be assumed that his trainer considers him all right, and as the opposition is very weak, Student Prince should be prominent.

It is evident that J. Shaw has two tough propositions in Stoney and Florent if he is to get the season's expenses. Florent has not been in work Ions:, and is not yet ready, but Stoney has been in constant work for weeks. At times he shows fair speed, but he is not solid, and frequently had gone to a break for reallv no reason at all. Yesterday he worked a mile and a half with Native Prince, hut he gave a poor exhibition, breaking badly, and even when he was paring he was not doincr his work smoothlv. He took 3.35 for the mile and a half, but would have done considerably better had he not tangled so much.
