NORTHLAND HANDICAP.
The acceptance of seven for the Northland Handicap, the chief event at the Northland meeting on Saturday, is not quite up to what one would have wished, and looking through the handicap, the only conclusion to be arrived at is that Explosion and Vendome will monopolise the betting. It is possible they will be beaten, but as backers will not" know that till after the race, they are not likely to put solid money on the others. Both these horses are on the limit of the 4.39 class, two miles, at Auckland, and as the maximum penalty that can be imposed for winning a 4.42 class is 4S yards, Yendome or Explosion, should either win at Whangarei, could only be penalised 12 yards at Auckland, and that if the handicapper went to the limit of his powers, which is not often done, so that probably Vendome and Explosion have the chance of winning next Saturday without affecting their Auckland handicap.
