RACING NEWS.

NOTES FROM THE WAIKATO. HORSES FOR THE HUNT FIXTURE. Al, an entrant for the Maiden Hunters' and the Hunt Cup Steeplechases at Cambridge, won an event at the point-to-point of the Waikato Hunt last month. The Matamata trainer, C. Carmont, has Unoco, Raiti Hiki, Ruby Dawn and Gold Rain engaged at the Waikato Hunt meeting on Labour Day. Gold Rain and Unoco are the most forward of these horses and can be expected to make a favourable showing. It is reported that the owner of Prince Val refused a four-figure price for the Valkyrian—Sports Queen gelding after his win at the Auckland meeting. This was Prince Val's third success in as many starts this season. Although he will be required to do his future racing in open company, there, is every reason for expecting that the Matamata candidate will continue to more than pay his way. •■ . Sports King, a full-brother to Prince Val, is among the horses working on the tracks at Matamata. Last spring he finished second to Arikitoa over a mile at Avondale, but he went amiss after that. Sports King is a year older than Prince Val and although he does not look like showing the same standard of ability as the latter, he should win races. Archangel won the hurdles at the hunt meeting twelve months ago, since which the Cambridge jumper has not appeared in public. The Archestown mare is again an entrant for the hurdle event on Labour Day. With 9.3 she will require to be considered if all ie well with her condition. Star of the East is doing good work on the tracks at Matamata. The Day Comet—lhapuna chestnut is to contest the chief event over country at the Labour Day meeting at Cambridge. Paganelli is entered for events at the Waikato Hunt and the Wellington meetings, which are to be held this month. At the time of writing, a decision had not been reached as to which Paganelli would race,at. '■'. '

The Jack Jumper displayed his best form to date during the racing of last season. The Valkyrian gelding won three races and had a second and three thirds among his placinge. He has been working well op the Matamata tracks of recent weeks and will be in good order when he lines up at Cambridge. Pegaway is down to have his first race of the season in the sprint (ivent at the Waikato Hunt Club's annual race fixture. A. Cook has been working Pegaway at Te Awamutu of recent weeks, but it is not expected that the Lucullus—Peggy Pryde gelding will be at his best until the summer meetings. Sports Queen, the danj of Prince Val and Sports King, will shortly b«» represented on the race track by a three-year-old Lucullue gelding, and a, two-year-old filly by the English Uiorse, Lapidary. The dam and her latest progeny are owned by Mr. G. Carolan, of Matamata. ' ' . Hazelburn won the cross-country double at the Waikato Hunt Club's meeting two seasons ago. The Rambler gelding only raced oh . a couple of occasions last season. This season he has been doing well in the hunting field and won the open point-to-point at Cambridge laet month. Hazelburn again figures in the big jumping event at the Labour Day fixture. While he is getting on in years he has only a light weight for a good jumper with a fair turn of speed. - j The Begum has been doing well on the tracks at Tβ Awamutu. The daughter of Chief Ruler and Lucella ran several good races last season, and as ehe is only a four-year-old her best days are ahead. If The Begum Is produced in the Bollard Memorial Handicap at Cambridge on Labour Day she will not lack support. Hakanoa is down to return to racing at the hunt meeting. The Hnntly trained Valkyrian gelding did a lot of racing last season, and, in earning just on £600 in stakes, paid hie way. Some further useful efforts can be expected from Hakanoa if he trains on the right way.
