STUDYING THE MAORI.
PROPOSED ECONOMIC SURVEY APPOINTMENT OF OFFICERS. (By Telegraph.—Special to " Star.") WELLINGTON, this day. No move has yet been made in the preparatory work for an economic survey of the Maori race, to which. Sir Apirana Ngata referred in the House of .Representatives, but it is understood that the Government has tlie matter ia view for early action, 1 To date a good deal of the legislation before the House of Parliament has been affecting the Maori's lands and not; his industrial work. Now it is felt that complete information is needed before any further legislation is put through. As much as anything the object of the new investigation will be scientific analysis of existing stores of information rather than field work in the collection of information. It is stated, however, that the Department concerned is considering advising the stationing of special officers at necessary points about the native territory. This work of corroboration of existing data and correlation of this data and any new information forms the basis of the survey and it is hoped that a movement will soon be made to complete the investigation of the Maori's place in the eommunitv.
