EARTHQUAKE FUNDS.
MAY BE SUFFICIENT. for individual claims. ME. TROUP'S IMPRESSION. (By Telegraph. —Own Correjpondent.) WELLINGTON, this- day. Mr. G. A. Troup, Mayor of Wellington, and Mr. J. B. Thomson. Under-Secretary of Lands, who are members of the Central Earthquake Relief Committee, have returned from an official visit to the earthquake area. Except for big landslides the country does not now show evidence of the severe shaking it received. Mr. Troup says the road to Reefton, via the Maruia Valley, is, from the scenic point of view, better than the Lyell-Buller Gorge route. It opens out into views of smiling valleys and snow-capped mountains, whereas' the gorge route was entirely confined. Speaking of claims made by earthquake sufferers, Mr. Troup said that so far as could be seen at present there would be sufficient funds to meet all individual claims. By that he meant there were other claims, from institutions, churches, orphanages, libraries, etc., which could only be considered after individual claims were satisfied. In his opinion the field inspectors of the Lands Department and the Public Works engineers, in collecting information and making out estimates of the damage done, had accomplished their work in a most efficient manner. .
