Labour Victory Due To Prestige Of Mac Donald. BRUCE'S TACTICAL ERROR. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) NEW YORK, October 15. The "New York Times" says: "It is reasonable to conclude tliat Labour's victory in Australia may have been due in part to the prestige of the Labour Government in Britain and that it may have received additional impetus from the acclaim which met Mr. Mac Donald on his American adventure. "Basically, however, the turnover to Labour must be attributed to the tactical error of the Bruce-Page Nationalist Government in advocating the virtual abolition of the Federal Arbitration Court." The "New York World" says: "A few months ago one of the oldest of the world's democracies passed under a Labour Government. Now, one of the very youngest —Australia —follows it. The sweeping victory of, the Labour party in the distant island continent is a striking occurrence. There can be no doubt that sympathy with Mr. MacDonald's Labour Ministry in London played a part in the result. "Mr. Scullin, the Labour Leader, who will be the new Prime Minister, appealed to the voters to elect a Government which would co-operate with the British Labour Government in developing the Empire and in promoting world peace." A message from Toronto says Mr. William F. Green, president of the American Federation of Labour, stated in an interview there that all the officials and delegates of the federation who had been following the election in Australia with keen interest would be pleased and inspired by the result. It was of world-wide significance that the success of Labour in Australia should have followed so closely upon the victory of Labour in Britain.
