HELPING INVENTORS.
I wish to express my accordance with your correspondent "Patent" in what he writes relative to inventions. An inventor is very seldom a business man, and there must be hundreds of good inventions which are languish-, ing and which will eventually die through lack of a little encouragement. I have in mind a scheme for an Inventors' Institute where.a man could work put his ideas and obtain the means for the making of models and- the marketing of his invention. The institute would embrace full sets of tools, lathes, drawing sets, mechanical books, patent journals, etc., and a register of patents which could ba open for inspection by business men interested. Such a concern would, of necessity, cost quits a sum of money, and there would lie the stumbling block. But I contend that it is a matter of national concern and the Govern*) merit may probably be induced to assist. In America and Germany the value of inventions is recognised and encouraged, with the result that these two countries are always in the forefront with new products, although it does not necessarily mean that they are mote' inventive peoples. If only a percentage of tlie inventions which would otherwise sink into oblivion were commercialised it would mean greater industrial prosperity and consequently greater general prosperity in the Therefore it is, I contend, the duty of the Government to lend every assistance po® B ' e ' A.W.U. ■
If "Patent," writing in your issue of the 10th inst., would work for the protection »y the Government of patents registered by AWZealand residents, I am of the opiniou much good to inventors would be the result. It is generally conceded that after P a , en has been taken out any company can infringe the patent and be successful if sufficient capital is available to place the owner o patent in financial difficulties and P re ,\ - him from contesting the infringement. i Zealand would retain quite a number ol successful inventions if Government prote . were given as in America.
