AUCKLAND ASSOCIATION.

„ SEASON OPENS NOVEMBER 23. :t: , ,r OTAGO CHALLENGES FOR TWO 5 CUPS. £ n ; fc ■■ .. ."v t A meeting of delegates to the Auck- | land Yacht and Motor Boat Association b was held last evening in the Squadron ® rooms, Mr. C. H. T. Palmer presiding. A letter was received from the Otago v c " r Yacht and Motor Boat Association forms ally challenging for the Sanders and b j Cornwell Cups for 1930. The Otago Association also notified that an a^plica- ° ! tion to hold the next Cornwell Cup con--0 . j test on Otago Harbour would be made r to the Takapuna Boating Club. Satisfaction was expressed by delen gates on receipt of both challenges, and t Otago was commended for the sporting r spirit shown. A request by the Otago Association that the Auckland Association take steps to delete the words in Rule 3: j "Boat not to be interfered with," as j unanimously recommended by the last Dominion conference, was also received. Y Mr. Wilkinson said as this came under the definition of racing rules, the Dominion conference would have power to 1 deal with it prior to the next contest. s Mr. Palmer pointed out that this asso--1 ciation had already decided against dele--2 tion of Rule 3, and it was decided to reply accordingly. , The date for the combined opening of the season was fixed for Saturday, ' November 23. On the motion of the J chairman clubs were requested to forward their proposed dates to the sec--5 retary to facilitate allocation. \ A letter from the Russell Regatta Committee, stating that the regatta would be held on December 27, was re- - ceived. The letter also set out reasons ! why the outboard championships should be held at Russell. It said Russell was . first to inaugurate outboard motor rac- , ing in New Zealaiid and claims to have . kept this form of racing prominent, and . trophies had been given by local sportsmen for the two principal outboard races [ under conditions requiring them to be ' raced at Rusrell. It was decided to point out that this association had no authority to allot outboard championships, which might be claimed by any port in New Zealand. The chairman suggested that the matter of championships might be discussed at the next Dominion conference. | A letter from the Auckland Harbour . Board was received in reference to a complaint by the association that the launches using the wharves on the upper harbour monopolised the berths. The board pointed out that up-river launches running a regular time-table had preference over pleasure craft. This point was readily conceded by delegates, but it was stated that at times launches lay alongside all day and it was thought that after setting down passengers, the berths might be kept clear. A letter was received from Mr. A. V. Tver, one of the measurers of the Sanders Cup class, stating that Yal complied with the requirements of the plan, offsets and specifications for tiie 14ft one-design Rona class at present in force and that she was entitled to a certificate. Mr. E. J. Kelly, the other measurer, had already sent in his approval of Yal and on the motion of Mr. Wilkinson the secretary was authorised to issue a certicate to Yal. Mr. Palmer stated that several clubs and gentlemen interested in the sport had ur-jed on the City Council the necessity of raisins the clearance under the bridge to be built on the new eastern roadway across Hobson Bay to a minimum • of 10ft above ordinary high-tide level. This matter, said the chairman, affected the future yachtsmen of Auckland, rather than the present. Members agreed that the question of clearance was urgent, in view of the near approach ot commencing the permanent bridge, and it was resolved "that: in -the opinion of

the delegates of all local yachting clubs a minimum clearance of 10ft should be provided to allow boats which would use this as a future boat harbour to enter and leave in safety. The secretary was directed to forward the resolution .to the Citv Council.

' The question of the adoption of a . I scheme, proposed by the Akarana Club, for the poo liner of prizes for the combined opening and closing events, was brought up by Mr. G. Miller. Several delegates state'd that a vote on the question had resulted against the proposal, but other clubs had not come to any decision. It was resolved to ask delegates to be prepared to vote on the matter at the next meeting,. Mr. E. Culhane asked if a boat belonging to a local club but owned outside Auckland could be registered with the association. The secretary pointed out that the rules did not allow this to Ik done, all boats which had gone away being removed from the register. A notice of motion was given by Mr. YV ilkinscn to alter the rule to read that where a boat which is owned awav from Auckland, but belongs to an affiliated club and apDlies for registration through that club, her registration be accepted. The annual meeting was -fixed for October 29. when all fixtures would be decided for the season.
