NEW SEASON'S WOOL.
1 FALSE PACKING AND WET. BUYERS TAKE FIRM STAND At a recent meeting in Christchurch between wool buyer's and brokers, unfavourable comment was made by buyers regarding the amount of wool offered for sale throughout New Zfialand last season which had been packed damp or wet. Whilst every endeavour is made by brokers to exclude such wool from sale until it can be reconditioned, it is not always possible to detect the trouble, particularly with unopened bales, where the pack shows no signs of moisture. • However, buyers say the trouble is increasing, and it has been suggested that the contract system of shearing may be one of the causes. If so, it behoves growers to exercise greater- supervision in the sheds and take every precaution to prevent wool being packed damp by a contractor who is anxious to get through with his job, irrespective ow whether the sheep are fit to shear or not. Another feature to which buyers drew attention is the inclination of some growers to include inferior wools in the centre of bales. With the increasing attention which the New Zealand market is receiving from Home and foreign buyers, it cannot be too strongly urged upon growers that nothing should be done which might prejudice buyers, and everything i»>ssible should be done to help forward tlie trade and make the local sales •."till more attractive. Buyers have indicated very clearly that they will adopt a firm stand during the coming season in regard to any palpable cases of false or careless packing, and growers are urged in their own interests and for the sake of the New Zealand trade bo exercise particular care in this respect.
