ANSWERS TO CORRESPONDENTS
VISITOR.—The nickname "tyke" has various meanings according to country and occasion of application, ranging from "dog" in Scotland, and "Yprkshireman" in England, to "Irishman" in Auckland. The origin of the colloquialism in Auckland, itself an Irish settlement, has never been satisfactorily explained, but for the past 20 years at least, it has been used universally in football circles, and accepted as a distinguishing term without any sinister thought. .
