A BUSINESS CONFERENCE.

To-day, after six years, the annual Conference of the Chambers of Commerce is meeting again in Auckland. There is obviously much to be said for the policy of holding conferences in Wellington, but with such a body as this, more to be said for making the conference movable. The conference is an influential body, but could be a stronger force in politics and economics. Of course Ave do not suggest that it should take sides in politics, but it could legitimately exert more force m certain directions, such as the movement to check Government interference in business and put community and private trading on a more equal footing. The business world can bring about such improvements if it unites and insists. State trading, taxation, fire losses, tariffs, highways policy, cash-order trading--the order paper of the conference is stiff with problems of first-rate importance. But the organisation's work is not confined to these more spectacular questions. It makes valuable suggestions on minor subjects, and the executive is a permanent organisation that during the interval between conferences constantly acts as a medium between the Government and the business world. The Government should be glad of any practical suggestions that the conference can make for the easing of the many difficulties that beset it.
