WIIAXGAREI, this day. The Whangarei cricket competition opened in favourable weather. High School, 144 (Kelsall 15, Izzard 66, Cotterill 29, Swinburne 19) beat Railways, 16S (Langdon IS, Burna 24, Dennis 17). For Railways, Hemi took three wickets for 49 runs, Matthews four for 43. For School, Cotterill took four wickets foor 35 runs, Swinburne three for 21 and Harrison three for S. Great hitting by Kew, who made 72 not out and hit seven fours and four sixes, enabled Onerahi (123) to beat Whangarei (33). Hewlett took five wickets for 11 runs, and Mason four for 14. In their follow-on, Whangarei made 114 (Gash 19, Jennings 26). Nomads declared with seven wickets down for 118. Portland made 74 for nine wickets and were saved by time. Magees stonewalled for 24 not out. For Nomads, Menzies took seven wickets for 22 runs, and Dunn three for 7.
