EARL OF MEATH DEAD. (Australian Press Assn. —United Service.) (Received 10.30 a.m.) LONDON, October 11. The death is announced of the.Earl of Meath. ' The Earl of Meath was born in 1841, and received his education at Eton and later in Germany.. He .passed the competitive examination for the Civil Service, and 1 entered the Foreign Office as a clerk in j 1863. Five years later he exchanged to the f Diplomatic Service, and was stationed ( successively at Berlin, The Hague, and Paris. He.was founder and president of the Dublin Hospital Sunday movement, and in 1879 was first chairman of the Young « Men's Friendly Society. He was elected f an alderman of the London County c Council, and held office from 1889 to 1892, and from 1899 to 1901. The Earl also took an interest in religious and philanthropic societies, and took an active part in the work of both. He was elected a senator of the Parliament of Southern Ireland by the members of the Privy Council in Ireland. He.also published several books dealing with social and historical matters.
