WHY BARLEY SUGAR IS CURLY.

"Once upon a time there lived in a little village an old lady and her only son. They were very poor and used to make sweets for the little people .to buy. Business had been very bad for a long time and, alas, the very last lot of their sugar was on boiling. "Ah-," said the old lady, "I do not know; how we shall live when this batch is eold. I do wish we had a few more customers." The poor boy was standing on the doorstep, feeling very sad, when along came a party of gay people on horseback. Just as he looked up, one lovely lady gave him a beautiful smile. Hans gazed at her and was charmed with her beautiful golden curls. Presently he was called to break up the barley sugar ready for sale, but somehow his thoughts were all for the pretty maiden, and as he thought,, he absently twisted the sticks round and round. "Oh, you are a bad "boy!"' scolded his mother, "just look what you have done; no one will buy that now." Quickly the boy seized the sweets and fled. "Oh, look, what pretty- sweets," cried the children and hurriedly bought them all. Orders came in so quickly after that that very soon mother had to employ helpers. Five years later 'the beautiful lady again visited the village, and was surprised to see a beautiful castle built there. As her party neared the gates, the young, man came forward and presented her with a large bottle of curly barley sugar, and told her how it had all happened. The lady was delighted, and the two became firm friends. Shortly afterwards they were married, and lived happily ever afterwards."
