FISH QUITE DEAF.

According to .recent research made by a German zoologist, fish are entirely lacking in a sense of hearing, but can discern tone by a highly developed eense of touch. They have no organ corresponding to any such mechanism as the ear of land animals and mau.

In experiments the fish failed to respond to ordinary sounds produced either above or below water, yet the zoologist managed to train a small, blind, sheat-fish to come out of its hiding place in response to a shrill whistle. That is, a fish would not ordinarily be aware of a. sound, but it had a subtle discernment in its sense of touch which would enable it to detect a noise it had learned to expect.
