THE VEGETABLE GARDEN.
Good tillage is essential at this time of the year if good crops are to be expected. ■ • . ■ i Crops such as Lettuce, Cabbage, that are growing fast will benefit by liquid manure or. a little nitrate of" soda. Sowings of most vegetable crops can be made now, and as soon as a crej» is off the ground should be cleaned and. a fresh planting made. Sow Peas to give a succession. Those that are up should have the soil drawn up to the plants. Potato planting can be done, especially in late districts. Crops that are up should be earthed up and sprayed. Make sowings of Ijettuce, Radish, to suit requirements. As a rule only small lots should be sown at one time. Sowings of Dwarf and Runner Beans can be made now. Dwarf Beans are a warm weather, crop, and in cold, exposed gardens it is best to wait till November before sowing. Tomatoes, Cape Gooseberries, can be planted out. In cold, wet gardens, however, November is quite soon enough.
