GREAT SOUTH ROAD.
BUILDING NEW BRIDGES. Motorists using the Great South Road have shown much interest in the work of constructing the new bridge over the Whangamarino River, south of Mercer. For some time past the contractors liave been busy making and driving piles, and the removal this week of. the pontoons and pile-driving plant has led to al] sorts of rumours. It had even been supposed that the work had been abandoned owing to difficulties in finding a satisfactory bottom. The explanation, however, is perfectly simple. The piles so far driven are "test piles," and it is understood that a solid foundation for the bridge has been got at a lesser depth than originally anticipated. The necessary data having been obtained, the plant has been removed to Rangiriri to carry out the same work for the bridge over the Onatea Stream. In the meantime the construction of. concrete piles is proceeding and both bridges will be completed without unnecessary delay.
