TANEATUA ROAD.
DEVIATION CONSTRUCTION. WORK FOR UNEMPLOYED ? fcUGtiESTION TO PRIME MINISTEK. [By Telegraph.—Own Correspondent.) OPOTLKI, this day. The following letter has been dispatched to the Prime Minister, Sir Joseph Ward, by the secretary of the Opotiki Chamber of Commerce, Mr. C. H. Fleming: "My chamber followed with much iiite"est your proposals to absorb the whole of the xmemployed in the Dominion immediately, and it respectfully requests that you should consider thi , prosecution of the road deviation a'. Taucatua a? a suitable a.nd profitable avenue of employment for a considerable number of men. "When the East Coa.st Main Trunk line reached Taneatua the Government ceased work upon it, with the idea of waiting until the returns for the completed portion were ascertained before proceeding further with the line. My chamber is credibly informed thai the traffic on the line considerably exceeded the expectations of the Railway Department, and it appears therefore that there is no reason, from the trafficearning point of view, for delaying any further the construction of the Tauea-tua-Opotiki sectiou of the line.
"As the first tAvo or three miles of the line will be constructed ou the present roadway, it is important that the road deviation should be put in hand well ahead of the line construction. Therefore it appears to my chamber that this work affords au exceptional opportunity for providing employment for a large Dumber of men., on work which would be almost immediately profitable to the Government, inasmuch as it will obviate considerable delay when the construction of the line is commenced, and bring the latter into a revenue-earning position much earlier than would otherwise be the case."
