oSEPTEMBER IMPORTS HEAVY. AND EXPORTS LIGHTER. NINE MONTHS COMPARED. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, October 11. The following returns of British overseas trade for the month of September, as compared with the figures for September, 1928, have been issued by the Board of Trade: — Imports increased £10,090,000, exports decreased £1,515,000, re-exports decreased £119,000. Principal increases were:—lmports: Grain and flour, £2.620,000; nondutiable food and drink, £922,000: wood and timber, £1,446,000; rubber, £1,153,000. Exports: Coal, £1,148,000. Decreases: Exports, cotton yarns and manufactures, £1,641,000; vehicles, £1,352,000. September In Late Years. The following table shows the overseas trade for the month of September in recent years:—

From the foregoing it will be seen that September was a fairly busy month, with merchants and manufacturers buying heavily, apparently with confidence in the future. A weak feature is the smallness of the re-exports, indicating that manufacturers have had a quiet spell. The result of the month's trading has been to substantially increase the adverse teade balance.
