IMMEDIATE NEED.

INFANT SCHOOL WANTED. OVERCROWDING AT POINT CHEVALIER. DIVIDED CLASSES. The headmaster of the Point Chevalier school, reporting to the committee lor the past month, says that the roll nuinber , was. 1i.'.0. The average attendance was 48.5, the best average yet recorded for any month since the school was established. "The work of the school is going along smoothly, except that we are somewhat inconvenienced by having , to hold clashes in two porches" continued the report. '"If we are successful in »ainirfg : tlie' use of the Bowling , Club pavilian for the use of one of our standard classes I will then bring P 3 to the main building to make room for the other little ones already in the infant school. Thus our infant classes are becoming divided. They should all be in the one building.

"I have"already 2"> pupils; of P 4 in the main huilding. By dividing the infant c'asses the infant mistress will not be in constant touch with them as she should be. Therefore I trust that the committee will make every endeavour to secure the promised two additional rooms at once. We need a complete infant school, and cannot hope to run our infant departmet in three rooms in such a large growing district." A member of the school committee states that two months ago the Minister, when in Auckland, was interviewed by the chairman of the school committee, who pointed out the overcrowded state of the school. Mr. Atmore then considered that Point Chevalier had a good case, and he said he would look into the matter on his return to Wellington. Since then the school has continued to grow, and it is contended that it is impossible to carry on without obtaining outside accommodation. The coinmitteeinen stated that Mr. J. Fletcher, M.P., was also shown through the school, and agreed with the committee that the infant department was overcrowded. He said he would do his best to get the additional rooms authorised immediately.
