ORIGIN OF UXIVERSE, To trace tho origin and development of the universe wa.3 the subject that occupied members of the Auckland Astronomical Society last evening, when a paper by Mr. A. C. Gifford, M.A., F.R.A.S., of Wellington, was read by the secretary of the 6ociety (Mr. E. G. Jones). Mr. Gifford showed that the main problem of cosmogony was to discover the life principle in the universe. The paper showed that matters connected with the universe had been speculated upon by ancient Chinese .phjloaphere three thousand yea re before Christ, and by the Chaldeans and the Greeks. Much credit was due to Professor Bickertou, of Chrietchurch, who propounded the theory of partial impact between heavenly bodies. Many other theories had been examined and were referred to in tho paper.
