HARD-UP COUPLE.
STOWAWAYS ON PAPANUI. NEW ZEALANDKRS RETURN, J TWO MEN SENT TO GAOL. Since they were last in the Dominion, Thomas Tonge and Hugh Ludlow have* had an adventurous career, which, has ended in each being sent to prison for 14 days, for stowing away on board the s.s. Papanui at Liverpool on August 3. Both men were arrested 011 the arrival of the cargo liner at Auckland yesterday. Tliey pleaded guilty to the charge. •Sub-Inspector McCarthy said 'the"two accused left New Zealand last year on the s.s. Otira as members of the crew. They went ashore at Rio de Janeiro, but stayed ashore too long and missed their ship at that port. They then appealed to the British Consul at Rio, and were given a passage to Southampton. Prom 'there they walked to London -and then on to Liverpool. Both being hard up and unable to secure employment, they jumped on board the Papanui, only to be discovered a day after the ship cleared Liverpool. However, they worked well 011 the voyage out to Auckland. This w« s not the first time Ludlow had been a non-paying passenger on a ship, for he was convicted of stowing away at Auckland in January of 1926. "I don't know what to do with these men," said Mr. P. K. Hunt, S.M., in sending both to gaol for a fortnight.
