SAVED LADYSMITH.
Famous Episode In South African War. SIR H. MEUX'S PART. (British Official Wireless.) (Received 11.30 a.m.) RUGBY, September 20. Admiral of the Fleet, Sir Hedworth Meux, -whose death is announced to-day, was associated with one of the important episodes of the South African War. He was then Captain Lambton, as he only assumed the name of Meux in latter years, in accordance with the will of Lady Meux. General Sir George White had been forced to concentrate his forces on Lady smith and act on the defensive. He had only light artillery and his chances of withstanding the attacks of the Boers were small. Naval assistance having been asked for, His Majesty's ship Powerful, with Captain Lambton'in command, was sent to Durban on .her arrival on October 29, 1899. Powerful 4.7-inch guns previously mounted for use in the field were landed immediately and sent with a naval brigade under Captain Lambton to Ladysmith. The arrival of these reinforcements undoubtedly saved Ladysmith. Sid Hedworth Meux was born in 1856, > the third son of the second Earl of ; Durham. He entered the Navy at the age of fourteen. He was promoted Admiral in 1915. He served at the bombardment of Alexandria and in the Egyptian war i of 1882. From 1894-1897 he was private secretary to the First Lord of the Admiralty. During the South African War < ,ne commanded the Naval Brigade in the i .siege of Ladysmith. He later entered ] politics, and was Member of Parliament < for Portsmouth from 1916-1918.
