APPLES STILL DEAR. ORANGES WILL BE SHOUT. ISLAND TOMATOES PLENTIFUL. CABBAGES UP AGAIN. Apples maintain the high priccs of the past few v.'eeks, and if anything the demand, is keener, as only light stocks aie being held. Local apples from cold storage show a certain proportion of bad fruit, which will result in an increased pi ice to the retailer . There will be no imported apples until the Canadian ship" ment in November. This variety was expected in October, but owing to the very late season in Canada all shipping space was cancelled. Large quantities are expected to be available in November and December. Island tomatoes ex the TV aipahi were in good condition, but much of the ripe fruit was spoilt owing to rough handling on the wharves. This line will be about the cheapest on the market for the next two or three weeks. Selling quotations are 6/ to 0/ per box. Island oranges are freely saleable at the price last quoted. Unfortunately, of the last shipment over 50 per cent will have to be discarded when repacked, which will have the eft'cct of raising prices. It is estimated that the buyer in Auckland will have to pay as much per dozen for oranges as the natives would pay for a box from the trees. The next shipment will be from California, ex the Golden Cloud. A further supply of grapes will also be available by the same ship. Ripe bananas are scarce and very dear.

Market values are:—Apples: Delicious, fancy, 14/ to 15/; others, 11/ to 13/; Sturmers, 12/ to 13/; Doughertys. 10/ to 12/6; Granny Smith, 13/ to 15/; Wolseley, 12/6 to 13/. Pears: Coles, pood condition, 9/ to 12/; Nelis, 9/ to 12/6. Lemons: Choice, 9/ to 10/6; No. 2 and mediums, 6/ to 7/6. Oranges: Island repacks, 22/6 to 24/; poorman, No. 1, large, 6/ to 6/6; medium and small, 4/ to's/; local, sweet, 6/6 to 10/6. Tree tomatoes: 6/ to 8/6. Bananas: First grade, repacks, up to 29/6; seconds and mediums, IS,/ to 23/. Grapes: Californian, in barrels, Thompson's seedless, 16/ to 17/; "White Malagas, 20/ to 21/. New Potatoes Freer. New potatoes are now coming in more freely and local suppliej are beginning to make their way on to the market. _There was a fresh shipment from Norfolk Island on the Waipahi yesterday. With the approaching end of the season, cabbages are not so plentiful and prices this week show a sharp increase. Influenced by the cabbage marked cauliflowers are expected to show an increase, both in demand and price. Root vegetables have a general hardening tendency, but large supplies are available. Asparagus makes its first appearance on the market, but in very limited quantity. Market prices are:—Potatoes: Southern, 8/6 to 9/ cwt; New, No. 1, 4d to 5d lb; No. 2, Id to 2% lb. Onions: American, 17/6 crate. Kumaras: Tauranga, 9/ to 10/ cwt. Cabbage: Best, 7/ to 13/ sack; others, 2/ to 5/. Cauliflower: 2/6 to 6/ sack. Swedes: 1/ to 2/ bag. Pumpkins: 7/6' to 18/ cwt. Beans: 2/ to 3/ lb. Lettuce: 3/ to 8/ case. Cucumbers: Hothouse, 5/ to 10/ doz. Cabbage: On benches, 1/ to 5/ doz. Cauliflower: On benches, 1/ to 4/ doz. Celery: 1/ to 4/6 bundle. Rhubarb: 3/ to 5/ doz. Spinach: 1/ to 2/ doz. Pumpkins: On benches, 1/ to 3/3 each. Spring onions: 3d to 1/ bundle. Radish: 1/ to 1/8 doz. Carrots, parsnips, beet and turnips: 6d to 1/ doz. Leeks: 3d to 5d bundle. Asparagus: 2/ to 3/ bundle. Eggs Steady. There is no change in the egg market and a moderate supply is met with a fair demand. Ruling values for first quality are:—Hen eggs, special grade, 1/3 dozen; A grade, 1/2; B grade, 1/1. Duck eggs, special grade, 1/2 dozen; A grade, 1/1; B grade, 1/. For a moderate supply of farmers butter, there is the usual fair demand. Market quotations are 1/1 to 1/4 per lb.
