THE WINDSOR CHAIR.
The Windsor chair is perhaps one of the most comfortable types of chair ever made. The rake of the back exactly accommodates the human frame; the seat is shaped, and that shape is governed by a clay mould, the mould being produced originally by the beautifully simple and obvious expedient of getting somebody to sit upon a mass of wet clay. In the old types of Windsor chair the bow of the back and the spindles were often made of wood of the yew tree, the seat of elm. and the legs of ash or oak; a highly decorative and most enduring association of woods. There is an unbroken tradition in the production of Windsor chairs, and at High Wycombe to-day, where most of the chairs used in England and many other countries are made, the same types, sturdy, well-proportioned, and wonderBjly comfortable, that were produced sevent y. a hundred and two ff"? ag0 ' aro bein S made in 1 factories. -
