The Ashhurton County Racm 0 _C 1 meeting, which marks the °P emn S 0 the flat racing season in the Southi Island will be held on Saturday. There has been a considerable weeding out, a it is unfortunate that many of the top weights representing the best-class horses who were nominated have failed to accept. There still remam howevcr, some good performers, and the racin should arouse a lot of interest. Althoiig i the Ashburton Handicap has attracted only five ' acceptors,. ,the. presence of Hoylake, Chide and Prickles—three candidates for the New Zealand Cupwill invest the race with plenty of.interest. Two other Cup horses—Count Cavour and Pink Coa;t—will be seen among the sprinters in the Farewell Handicap. . Three-year-olds figure prominently m most of the races at Ashburton on Saturday. The South Canterbury pair-Pink Coat and Night Lad, who showed g°°d form last season, will attract a lot ot attention, while the Riccarton contingent will include Dutch Money, Meprisant, Flair,.. Desert Song, Comique, Quick Plunge, Pixie Gold, Miss Nightraid, Sapient, Bay Queen and Straighitcourse, among whom are some very promising gallopers. The three-year-old form at Ashburton may provide a guide' to Dunedin Guineas prospects.
