VOLUNTEER LABOUR.
HINEMOA SAILS FOJt BLUFF. SEAMEN'S DISPUTE UNSETTLED. Volunteer labour was obtained to man the Hinemoa, which sailed early this morning for Bluff, via Westport, after a fruitless attempt to settle a dispute between the Seamen's Union and the owners. Differences of opinion arose in regard to the number of firemen and the rate of pay for seamen. An abortive conference was held yesterday morning between the secretary of the union and a representative of Spedding, Ltd., the vessel's local agents. On behalf of the union it was demanded that there should be six firemen and the rate of pay for seamen on the trip should be £1 a day. The agents stated that the owners were prepared to man in accordance with the award conditions and at the union's rates of wages, plus 25 per cent, and return the crew from Bluff to Auckland. As the union would not agree to these conditions the agents enrolled volunteer labour, which is heing given the wages and conditions offered to the union.
