The South Canterbury three-year-old Pink Coat struck himself recently and may be unable to fulfil his engagement in tlie Great Northern Guineas next month.

C. Davis has been engaged to ride Lady Limond in the New Zealand Cup. Davis, who has served his apprenticeship period, is now attached to G. Neich's stable at Clareville, and rode Full Mark when he won both days at Marton. ITe is a capable light-weight and has made a good start for the season.

The local two-year-olds are to bo indulged in barrier practice next Tuesday morning at Ellerslie. A number of them claim engagements at the Avondale meeting, and trainers- are sure to take full advantage of the opportunity to educate their charges in one of the most important features of the racing game.

Tbrec-ycar-ohls figure prominently in the Ashburton nominations. The South Canterbury pair, Pink Coat and Night Lad, are engaged, while the Riccarton contingent includes Dutch Money, Merprisant, Straightcourse, Flair, Aspiring, Aladdin, Bay Queen, Desert Song, Comique, and Quick I 'lunge.

When the last mail to hand left London • Tctratema, by The Tetrarch, was at the head of the winning sires' list with a total of £27,325, of which sum £15,450 was won by tlie three-year-old Mr. Jinks. Last year the progeny of Tctratema won stakes to the value of £30,934, so that lie is a proved stud sueCC6S.

Spring Abbey is doing plenty of serviceable work at headquarters and he appears to be thriving on it, judging by his condition. Although a lazy worker on the track, he showed a fair amount of pace over a live-furlong journey yesterday morning, and J. Ciiisholm should be able to place him to advantage later in the season.

There are (states a Southern exchange) a large number of racegoers who are anxiously awaiting the appearance of Mr. J. R. McKcnzie's colt Llewellyn in a race. His connections claim that he is the best bred horse in New Zealand, and although other owners also claim that their horses have this honour, there are few who will disagree that a combination of Guy Axworthy and Sail Francisco bloods takes a lot of beating. Llewellyn has made a profound impression on the American trainer R. B. I'iaxico, who Lit a letter to the "American Horse Review" claims that the colt has done quarters in 31s and a mile in 2.15. This is eyeopening information, so look out the lirst time he is taken to tlie races. It will be "some" picnic.

A very iiileresting feature of the card presented by the Otago Hunt Club at Wingatui last Saturday was furnished by tho two-vear-old parade. Fifteen youngsters figured on the card, and with one or two exceptions they were sprinted down the straight. In the first division Mr. B. S. Irwin's filly by Tractor from an Absurd marc finished on strongly and led homo the Limond-Motley colt A 1 Jolson, who was followed by the Weathervniie —Panama colt and tlie Tea Tray —Kerb filly. In the second lot (he Last Dart —Sue'/, lilly piloted the way to the Rosenor —Monoxide colt, and the Lust Dart —Native Lady lilly with (lie Last Dart —Computer filly were next. The most forward of the lot in appearance (says "Sentinel") is the well-grown and shapely Hosenor —Monoxide colt and the Liinond —Motley coif.
