WORLD'S AIR RECORD. British Pilot Flies At 355.8 Miles An Hour. 37 MILES ON PREVIOUS BEST. (Australian and N.Z. Press Association.) (Received 11 a.m.) LONDON, September 10. An attempt to create a new air speed record over 3 kilometres (1 mile 1520 yards) was made to-day at Calshot by British pilots in an effort to better the time of Major di Bernhardi's record of 318.62 miles an hour. It is officially announced that Lieutenant Orlebar created a world's record speed of 355.8 miles an hour. Flight-Lieutenant Stainforth's speed was 330.3. Lieutenant Orlebar's best lap was 3G8.8 miles, but the return laps against the wind lowered the average..
