The long stockings formerly worn were called hose. When knee-breeches were introduced the breeches were called upper-stocks, and the lower part netherstocks or stockings. The knitted stocking originated in Italy. Tt was first brought to England by William Rider in 1564. Woven stockings were devised by William Lee, of St. John's College, Cambridge, in 1599.
