AUCKLAND AMATEUR TITLE. ROBERTS BEATS HACKETT. In the Auckland provincial amateur billiards championship last evening, E. V. Roberts, present holder of the title, defeated'W. E. Hackett, in the presence of a large attendance. At his first visit to the table, Roberts made a break of 2G, but runs of 35 and 21 gave Hackett the lead. Playing the red ball game well Hackett added splendid runs of 77 and SS, which gave him a commanding lead. One hundred and thirty points behind, Roberts rallied with breaks of 28, 37 and 24. Hackett went ahead again with scores of 31 and 21, Roberts replying with an all round break of 44. A brilliant spell of billiards was followed by a break of 53 by Roberts —again the result of good all-round play. Hackett then made a run of 35, but Roberts was a few points ahead at the 400 mark and a break of 44 turned the game in his favour. Playing pluckily Hackett registered a break of 21, but an unfinished run of 28 gave Roberts the match. Both players showed good form. The final scores were.—E. V. Roberts, ■ 500; breaks of 2G, 28, 37, 24, 44, 53, 44 and 28 unfinished; average, 9. W. E. Hackett, 433; breaks of 35, 20, 77, 58, 31, 22, 35 and 21; average, 8. The first semi-final to-night will be between 11. F. Valentine and E. V. Roberts.
